Named after the Amis chef who runs it and his two daughters, Atomo Arifowang Canglah (Urn Lily Spring) is a local culinary landmark. As well as using traditional Amis ingredients, such as glutinous rice and grilled pork, Urn’s aim is to demonstrate to his customers the myriad ways in which these ingredients can be prepared, without sacrificing the spirit of Amis cuisine.
In an airy, high-ceilinged building, several tables are arranged over two floors, accommodating up to a hundred people. Vivid prints by the Amis artist Yosifu, who now spends half of the year in his adopted hometown of Edinburgh, hang from the walls, providing a vibrant backdrop against which to sample the colourful dishes.
A word of warning: make sure you go on an empty stomach! The 10-course omakase meal offers a mouth-watering selection of dishes, including unique takes on local ingredients, such as smoked sweet potato balls, freshly caught seafood of all descriptions, glutinous rice balls covered in deep-fried taro flakes, and the chef’s famous sea-salt encrusted fish – all served with the local millet wine and a generous portion of typical Amis warmth and hospitality.
